Locations

Since establishing itself at the Victoria Dock site in 2004, Westgate Ports acquired land for inland ports at Altona and Lyndhurst. The company also operates at Maryvale, in the Latrobe Valley, on behalf of Australian Paper.

Westgate Ports plans to integrate these locations as part of its inland ports strategy. This strategy is in line with the Victorian Government's plan for a Melbourne Intermodal System (MIS).

Victoria Dock

Located in the Port of Melbourne, Victoria Dock has been the base for Westgate Ports' operations following a successful bid for a 21 year lease from the Port of Melbourne Corporation (POMC) in 2004.

Responding to the growth of containerisation, the Victorian Government decommissioned the Victoria Dock site in 1990, preparing the site and opening 'expressions of interest' to the private sector in 2002.

Since arriving at the Port of Melbourne in July of 2004, Westgate Ports has managed escalating volumes of freight to and from Victoria Dock. The 21 hectare site will play a vital role in achieving Westgate Ports' inland ports strategy, eventually linking hubs at Altona in the west and Lyndhurst in the south east.

Westgate Ports plans for Victoria Dock to address issues raised by the Victorian Government, including the movement of freight around the state and dealing with the volume growth of the Port of Melbourne, while reducing truck traffic in metropolitan Melbourne, and the development of the Melbourne Intermodal System (MIS).

Westgate Ports is committed to maintaining Victoria's position as Australia's freight and logistics capital.

Altona

Two years after acquiring the land at Victoria Dock in 2004, Westgate Ports acquired land to develop and manage an inland port from Altona, 18 kilometres west of Melbourne's city centre.

As the ideal location for port users seeking a long-term and cost-effective distribution centre in Melbourne's western district, the Altona site will playing a vital role in achieving Westgate Ports' inland ports strategy. This inland hub will offer Westgate Ports the additional advantage of being able to offer clients 100,000m2 of warehouse facilities in Altona.

Westgate Ports intends to start developing the Altona site within the next few years, aiming to launch efficient road and rail links to and from the Port of Melbourne by 2013.

Lyndhurst

As part of Westgate Ports' inland strategy it acquired land to develop and manage an inland port at Lyndhurst, 46 kilometres south-east of Melbourne's city centre.

The Lyndhurst site is the ideal location for port users seeking a long-term and cost-effective distribution centre in Melbourne's south-eastern district. This inland hub will offer Westgate Ports the additional advantage of being able to offer clients 600,000m2 of warehouse facilities in Lyndhurst.

Westgate Ports intends to start developing the Lyndhurst site within the next few years, aiming to launch efficient road and rail links to and from the Port of Melbourne by 2013.

Maryvale

Westgate Ports manages the freight of pulp and paper products for Australian Paper, which is the second largest exporter (by volume) at the Port of Melbourne, a partnership that led to securing a three-year contract to operate an inland port site at Maryvale, Victoria.

Positioned in the heart of Gippsland, Victoria, 160 kilometres east of Melbourne, the Maryvale site is home to the Maryvale Mill, Australia's largest integrated fine paper-making and packaging papers complex, producing more than 500,000 tonnes of paper every year.

Committed to best practices in environmental sustainability and efficiency, Westgate Ports aims to import and export cargo from Victoria Dock to link with rail and utilise Australian Paper's site at Maryvale as a regional hub for other freight in the Gippsland area.

In 2010, Australia's shipping, ports and maritime industry recognised Westgate Ports for its efficient freight movement, at the 15th Lloyds List DCN Shipping and Maritime Industry Awards. In a triumph over larger multi-national organisations, Westgate Ports was awarded the Transport and Logistics Intermodal Award for its partnership with Australian Paper and the freighting of its pulp and paper products.
