History

Westgate Ports was established in 2004 by Sam Tarascio Snr, following the successful submission of a tender to the Port of Melbourne Corporation for a 21-year lease at Victoria Dock.

Bringing to the agreement more than three decades of logistics expertise, Westgate Ports heritage includes extensive experience in storage, transport and logistics. Since establishing itself at the Victoria Dock site in 2004, Westgate Ports has also acquired land for inland ports at Altona and Lyndhurst.

Recognising a need for solutions to congestion at the Port of Melbourne, Westgate Ports constructed a rail terminal at Victoria Dock in 2007 to support its inland ports strategy.

By 2009, Westgate Ports commenced stevedoring operations with the first ship arriving at Victoria Dock and the rail terminal received its first train. The arrival of the first train from Maryvale represented the beginning of a new era for intermodal freight terminals in Melbourne, with Westgate Ports aiming to bring online its facilities in Lyndhurst and Altona by 2013.
